Greetings NABS Family,
This past week started on a somber note for me. On Monday, six-teenagers drowned in the Red River near Shreveport, La. This gave me pause to reflect on this terrible tragedy. The reason; not only were the teenagers unable to swim, neither were their relatives who stood by helplessly watching the heartbreaking loss of these young victims.
Nearly 60% African-American children can’t swim, which is almost twice the figure for white children. In addition, African-American children drown at a rate almost three times the overall rate. A few years ago, the University of Memphis’ Department of Health and Sports Sciences conducted a study to determine what factors contributed most to the minority swimming gap.
The study determined among the key influences was that if a parent is unable to swim (which was far more likely in minority families than majority families), or if the parent believed swimming was dangerous, then the child was far less likely to learn how to swim.
One of NABS purposes is the promotion of “water skills” for people of African descent. The tragedy in Shreveport was a wake-up call for me. As divers, we’ve learned to adapt to the underwater environment. Just think, prior to the introduction of modern scuba equipment, diving was a dangerous pastime for only a small number of daredevils. We are enthusiasts in a surprisingly safe – sport that’s engaged in by millions.
But as NABS members we have assumed a greater responsibility not only as ambassadors of the sport, but as role models and advocates who promote water safety in our communities. Let’s remember that we are not only talkers, but doers! Let’s hope we inspire our children to act and not simply remain on the sidelines and become potential victims!
A reminder, the NABS Regional Representatives election is this November. Please reach out to your club president or the Regional Rep servicing your area or Gayle Patrick, Nominations Chair, to express your interest in serving NABS. It’s also a great way to learn the inner-workings of NABS and influence decisions that affect the future of YOUR organization!
Finally, the Summit is quickly approaching. Keep an eye out for the upcoming Summit Shout Out detailing information about Summit activities! Also, keep in mind there is a message board on the NABS website for attendees seeking travel companions, roommates or wanting general information about the Summit and its activities.
I look forward to seeing you in Costa Rica!
Yours in service,
Zel Head
NABS President
