Science and Education Committee

Although NABS and NABS clubs have always been involved in both science and education, there has never been a formal umbrella under which these endeavors could come together.  At the 2003 summit in Bonaire, it was determined that the science and education activities of NABS are the strongest areas that we have to pursue and justify our 501(c)3 designation.  President Sujon Low asked Dr. A. José Jones to chair the newly formed committee.  Dr. Jones, a Marine Biologist and educator has been involved with several major NABS projects.

A meeting was held with the individuals involved with major ongoing NABS projects to select coordinators.  The individuals who originally initiated the projects and who were currently working on the projects were appointed as project coordinators.  Our major projects are as follows:

Project Name
Project Manager(s)
National Undersea Research Program (NURP)
University of Connecticut Research Program
Charlie Lumpkin

Henrietta Marie
Michael Cottman and Bill Murrain
Guerrero Slaveship Project Dr. Jose A. Jones and Bill Murrain

Cayman Project (TBA)
Dr. Jose A. Jones and volunteers

The Committee started with ongoing projects because several of the project managers initiated these projects and have been working on two or more of them for years.

At the President’s Meeting hosted by AVSC in New York, Dr. Jones reported on the activities of the newly formed Science and Education Committee and shared what they envisioned as some of its functions:

Inventory Science and Education activities of NABS
Monitor and assist NABS and NABS clubs projects when requested with resource personnel and funding sources
Act as a clearing house for projects
Develop a NABS National Scholarship
Revamp the Youth Education Summit (YES)
Under education, NABS should be more involved in scuba education and in a National Speakers Bureau
Making other clubs aware of the scope and magnitude of science and education endeavors of NABS and NABS clubs to get more individuals involved in projects and to use ongoing projects as templates to be duplicated.

A call for volunteers is being made to all clubs and NABS members to participate in our National Speakers Bureau and individuals interested in working on any of the science and education projects.  The committee is also requesting that all clubs submit a list of their ongoing science and education projects for cataloging.  NABS believes that science and education “research” will be the most important and the most visible function that we will be involved in for the future.
